Indian -origin businessman Tanmay Sharma has been arrested in a big healthcare fraud case at Los Angeles International Airport. The total amount of this case is about Rs 1,244 crore (USD 149 million). 61 -year -old Sharma is the founder and former CEO of Sovereign Health Group, which is now closed. These organizations used to provide de -addiction and mental health services.
According to the US Department of Justice, Sharma cheated health insurance companies a total of US $ 149 million through fake claims. He also gave an illegal bribe of about 21 million dollars (about 175 crore rupees) to recruit patients for his centers. A federal grand jury has accused him of eight serious crimes, including four wire fraud cases, one conspiracy allegations and three illegal referral cases.
According to the US Attorney Office, Central District of California, the Sovaren Health Group fraudulently nominated patients in insurance plans without their knowledge, using fraud strategies.
The FBI started an investigation into the matter in the year 2017. As part of the investigation, he searched the treatment centers of Sovereign Health in Southern California, its main office and Sharma’s house. The company stopped its operations in 2018. Another person involved in the case, Paul Jin Sen, has also been arrested. He has described himself as innocent and his trial is going to start on 29 July.
Tanmay Sharma is originally from Guwahati, Assam. He studied medical from Dibrugarh Medical College in 1987 and completed his internship at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. Subsequently, he moved to the UK and then the US, where he worked in the field of medical and research.
He obtained his first medical license from the Indian Medical Council in 1987, followed by a second license from the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom in 1988. They are known worldwide for their research on schizophrenia and mental health issues. Over the years, he has published more than 200 research papers and has written five books.
He is an internationally recognized research psychiatrist. Their work has been focused on brain functioning, cognizance and human behavior in mental illnesses. Sharma has served in several editorial boards, selected as peer reviewers for 14 international medical magazines and served in various advisory boards controlling the development of antisicotics.
Tanmay Sharma’s father, Phani Sharma, was a famous theater artist, actor and director from Assam. Phani Sharma Anuradha and now closed Rupayan and Anupama were also the owners of the cinema hall.
