The family paint business, which started in 1898, has today become India’s second largest paint company. In 2023, Berger Paints’ revenue reached Rs 10,619 crore, making it the country’s leading company after Asian Paints. The company’s hold is strong not only in India but also in countries like Russia, Poland, Nepal and Bangladesh.
Journey from British company to Indian brand
The Dhingra brothers had purchased British company Berger Paints from Vijay Mallya in the 1990s. After this, major changes were seen in the company. Both brothers focused on quality, cheap prices and attractive marketing strategies. The result was that within a few years, Berger Paints established a strong presence across the country and became a trusted brand among consumers.
The story reached from crores to billions
After studying from Delhi University, the Dhingra brothers expanded their paint business in Amritsar, Punjab. By the 1970s, their annual turnover had reached Rs 10 lakh, while in the 1980s they became the largest paint exporter to the Soviet Union, with an annual turnover of Rs 300 crore. Today his total wealth is around $8.2 billion (Rs 68,467 crore), making him counted among the richest industrialists of India.
The future is in the hands of the new generation
Today the command of Berger Paints is in the hands of the next generation. Kuldeep Singh’s daughter Rishma Kaur and Gurbachan Singh’s son Kanavdeep Singh Dhingra are executive directors in the company. Operating from Kolkata headquarters, this company is now expanding rapidly in international markets.
