Azim Premji started a degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, USA, but returned to India in 1966 due to his father’s sudden death and returned to India and took command of his father’s business. The business of his company Western India Vegetable Project Limited was not running right and there was a lot of debt on it. Azim Premji started efforts to improve the condition of the company.
Success after Emergency
Azim Premji got business success after the Emergency was removed in the country. In fact, in 1977, in the cabinet of the then Morarji Desai, Industry Minister George Fernandes asked foreign companies to follow the FERA law. Under this law passed in 1973, the Indian should have had a majority stake in foreign companies to do business in India or the company had to share technology. Many companies decided to follow these laws, but IBM and Coca Cola decided to leave the country.
Premji was already sensed by IT sector’s future
Azim Premji saw a big opportunity in the IT sector and applied for a license to do business in this sector. Meanwhile, the name of Western India Vegetable Project Limited was changed to Wipro. The company initially started working in hardware, but over time the company’s software business went ahead.
Now the business of Wipro is spread in 100 countries
At present, Wipro’s business is spread over more than 100 countries. The company’s market cap is about 2.80 lakh crore rupees. In FY 25, the company earned a profit of Rs 13,218 crore. In 2019, Azim Premji resigned as the chairman of Wipro. His son Rishad Premji took his place. Azim Premji has the biggest hand in bringing Wipro to the heights.
₹ 1.275 lakh crore donations have been donated
Azim Premji’s name also comes in the big donors of the country. So far, he has donated more than $ 15 billion i.e. ₹ 1.275 lakh crore. In 2001, Azim Premji dedicated a large part of his property to philanthropy and established the Azim Premji Foundation. This foundation mainly works in the field of education in India.
In 2013, Azim Premji became the first person of India to join the “The Giving Play” started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett and pledged to donate more than half of his assets. The Government of India honored Padma Bhushan in 2005 and Padma Vibhushan in 2011 for his contribution.
