Hazaribagh: The only GI tag of Jharkhand’s only GI tag, sohrai art, is not an identity today. Born from the caves of the mountains of Hazaribagh, this art is now leaving its mark on international forums. Rudan Devi, a resident of Jorakath village of Barkagaon block of Hazaribagh district, has an important contribution in keeping this art alive and reaching new heights.

President also appreciated artwork
Recently, Rudan Devi got an opportunity to meet the President of India Draupadi Murmu. She went to Rashtrapati Bhavan in collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Center for Arts (Ranchi Regional Center) and Ministry of Culture. Nine other sohrai artists from Barkagaon were also accompanied by women. President Draupadi Murmu not only appreciated his artwork, but also encouraged him by offering saris and souvenirs.

First air travel

During the talks of local 18 Jharkhand, Rudan Devi said that this was the first time she traveled by air. The experience of sitting on the plane was one of the most important moments of his life. During a stay of about 10 days in Delhi, he engraved Sohrai art on 35 meters of clothes, which the President was also very happy to see. And appreciating them and said that even with one hand you do much better artwork, keep this arts alive in this way and keep it safe for generations to come.

Rudan Devi’s visit is full of struggles
Rudan Devi’s life journey has been full of struggles. His right hand was badly burnt during a domestic accident. Doctors had to cut their hands as the infection increased. She used to make paintings first with this hand. Rudan Devi did not give up even after losing her hand. She is making fabulous artifacts with the same hand today by practicing art with left hand and continuously practicing. And today it is getting its iron among artists across the country.

Rudan Devi further states that the Madam President praised her and presented her sari and souvenirs as a gift. His journey to Delhi was very funny. There should be more efforts to carry out this art., He said that such trips and platforms are helpful in giving new identity to artists.

Threat from village walls to world stage
Sohrai art, which was limited to only the walls of the village, is today making its mark on the world stage with the efforts of artists like Rudan Devi. In the world stage, the echo of Sohraya is not only the echo of Jharkhand but also the civilization culture and nature echo.
