The story of Zomato began when Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chadha, who had been an alumnus of IIT Delhi, while working in Ban & Co. in New Delhi saw that many people in the office were waiting for a long time to watch the menu card. It was from here that he got the idea of finding a solution in his mind and this thinking laid the foundation of a platform called ‘Foodibe’.

This is how ‘Zomato’ started

He started scanning the menu card of different restaurants and started uploading it on the website and the people of the office started using these digital menu, which saved everyone’s time. Gradually, traffic started growing on the website and then he decided to provide this service to all the people and this Foodibe later became Zomato.

Name changed in 2010

Foodibe first started in Delhi and then it was extended to cities like Mumbai and Kolkata. Every year there was a steady increase in the number of people using this app. Foodibe gave customers a unique and convenient service, due to which it became famous very quickly.

This success inspired its founders to take it to the international level. However, the name ‘Foodibe’ was a bit difficult to hear. So in 2010 it was renamed Zomato which was more attractive, easy to remember and giving different identity. It is from here that the real success story of Zomato started, which has become a global brand today.

Deepinder Goyal played an important role in increasing this entire business. He was born in Muktsar city of Punjab. Both his parents were teachers, and their childhood was spent in an ordinary family. During the days of early studies, Deepinder did not take much attention to studies. Even he had failed in the sixth grade. But he did not give up and slowly worked hard.

Eventually, he completed his studies up to class XII from DAV College, Chandigarh. After this, in 2001, he was selected in IIT Delhi, one of the most prestigious institutions in the country. There he did B.Tech in Maths and Computer Science. After completing his studies, he started his first job in a Delhi company. This is where the real story of his career begins.

Zomato’s business model

In the initial stages, the purpose of Zomato’s founders was not to earn money. They just wanted to give an easy solution. But when the website started getting tremendous appreciation from the people, they realized the big business opportunity hidden in it. Today Zomato has about crores of registered customers.

Seeing the userbase, many restaurants started advertising on Zomato, which led the company to get a lot of revenue. Also, Zomato introduced cashless payment facility, so that customers can easily make digital payment. The move made Zomato a even more reliable and convenient platform.

When did the name of Eternal?

The country’s well-known food delivery company Jomato decided to change the name in February 2025. The company allowed this in the board meeting and in such a situation Jomato will be known by the new name ‘Eternal’. The company has also informed the stock exchange (BSE) about this.

The company’s CEO Deepinder Goyal said that when Jomato bought the Quick delivery platform Blinkit, since then he started calling his parent company as ‘earliest’ instead of Jomato.

The aim of this change is that Jomato is no longer a food delivery app. The company is now working in many other businesses like Blinkit, Hyperpire and Live Kitchen. In such a situation, the name ‘Eternal’ shows the entire business of the company better, while ‘Jomato’ will remain only a food delivery brand.
